To Remove or Not to Remove: How We Handle Hardware During Painting
A question we get often: "Are you going to take the door knobs and switch plates off, or just paint around them?" The honest answer is: it depends on the hardware. Good painters don't apply a single blanket rule here — the right approach changes based on what the hardware is, how it's built, and how old it is. Here's how we think through it.
Switch Plates and Outlet Covers: Always Off
This one's simple. Switch plates and outlet covers are inexpensive, held on with one or two easily accessible screws, and there's no good reason to paint around them. Removing them takes seconds, gives a clean, professional edge, and completely avoids the messy look of paint bridging onto plastic or crowding around the edges of a cover plate. This is standard practice on every job, no exceptions.
Modern Door Knobs and Handles: Remove Them
Most contemporary door hardware is designed for easy removal and reinstallation — a couple of visible or concealed screws, a simple mounting mechanism, and parts that are built to come apart and go back together without issue. For this type of hardware, removing it before painting is the right call. It allows the door edges and surrounding trim to be painted cleanly and completely, without cut lines, tape edges, or missed spots hiding behind the hardware. Reinstallation is quick, and the finished result looks noticeably better than working around hardware left in place.
Antique and Older Door Hardware: Sometimes Better Left Alone
This is where judgment matters. Older or antique door knobs, escutcheons, and handles — the kind often found in character or heritage homes — can be a different story. Many of these were manufactured decades ago, using mounting mechanisms, set screws, or fittings that have become brittle, seized, or simply weren't designed with modern disassembly in mind. Attempting to remove this kind of hardware can sometimes result in:
Stripped or seized screws that won't budge without force
Cracked or broken porcelain, glass, or cast components
Mounting mechanisms that are difficult or impossible to reassemble correctly once separated
When hardware shows these risk signs, the safer and more respectful approach is to leave it fully assembled in place and carefully mask it off rather than risk damaging something that may be original to the home and difficult or impossible to replace. A clean, tight mask around well-preserved antique hardware protects it completely while still allowing the surrounding door and trim to be painted properly. It's a case where doing less to the hardware is actually the more careful, more professional choice.
Modern Electronic and Smart Door Hardware: A Similar Case for Masking
A newer version of this same judgment call has emerged with the rise of electronic and smart door hardware — keypad deadbolts, smart locks, video doorbells integrated into door hardware, and similar devices. Unlike a simple mechanical knob, these often involve:
Internal wiring or battery compartments that complicate removal and reinstallation
Paired or calibrated components that can be disrupted if disconnected and reconnected incorrectly
Manufacturer warnings against unnecessary disassembly, given the electronics involved
Rather than risk a malfunction, miscalibration, or void warranty by removing hardware that wasn't designed to be routinely taken apart, the more sensible approach is often the same as with antique hardware: mask it off carefully and paint around it, preserving full function without any unnecessary risk.
The Common Thread
Whether it's a $2 switch plate or a smart deadbolt, the underlying principle is the same: hardware that's easy and safe to remove should come off for the cleanest possible result, and hardware that carries real risk of damage or malfunction on removal should be protected in place instead. It's a small decision on the surface, but it's one more example of the kind of judgment that separates a rushed paint job from one that actually respects the details of your home.
